Flotsam & Jetsam (8/7)

The Necessity of Church Membership – This is awesome.

Going There: The Dark Knight Rises – Inexplicably, this is the first review I’ve read which gives due attention to the movie’s staunchly conservative politics: “There’s no doubt that The Dark Knight Rises presents a vigorous defense of the free market and private enterprise (those mainstream reviewers who claim the film’s political themes are muddy are dishonest, blind, or still struggling to come to terms with their disappointment in Nolan).”

The God Who Gathers and Transforms His People – A quote you should certainly read, from a book you should certainly read. I’ve added it to my book list – or rather, obelisk.

Biblical Masculinity and the Importance of Role Models – Trip Lee observes, “There are just no role models around for men at all. We’ll talk about ‘a godly man is actually supposed to lead’ and when we say that to dudes, they have no idea what in the world we’re talking about because they’ve never seen it before.”

Movie Review: War Horse – Finally. A reviewer who renders praise where praise is due.

The Band of Brothers’ 10 Secrets of Leadership – Great book. Great mini-series. Great lessons. “Before going to battle in Normandy, some of the men suspected Winters of being a Mennonite because he stayed sober and never cussed. But he proved himself to be an able field commander and tactician, and they soon came to admire him. Each man of Easy Company who survived the war praised Major Winters as a true leader. He instilled confidence. He led by example.”

“Substitute ‘damn’ every time you’re inclined to write ‘very;’ your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.” ~ Mark Twain
