Flotsam & Jetsam (3/22)

Book Giveaway – My Mom is hosting a giveaway of the excellent book Choosing Gratitude, written by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. If you haven’t entered, I highly recommend you do.

And Another Book Giveaway – For March, Persis is giving away a copy of Dr. Joel R. Beeke’s Living For God’s Glory: An Introduction to Calvinism.

What’s Your Favorite Ryle Book? – Since we’re on the subject of books, hop over to Erik’s blog and take a neat survey.

On the Nature of Blog-Posts – Ok, this is a must-read for any blogger, veteran or newbie. Dan Phillip’s writes about the strengths and limitations of blogging: “As it is the nature of a proverb to make compress some truth about a subject and make it unforgettable, so it is the design of a post to examine one or two aspects of a subject. If it’s a good post (as I judge posty goodness, anyway), it will do it informatively, memorably, and perhaps a bit provocatively.”

Book Review: Think – An excellent review of John Piper’s Think. “Piper desires to build a case that would challenge each reader to carefully consider what he says and to become people who use their thinking process as a means by which to treasure God.”

Movieology: Red Riding Hood [Caution: Mature] – I saw the preview for this film during a recent trip to the theater, and promptly predicted it would be rotten. Was I right? You bet.

The Heresy of the Free Spirit – From Kevin DeYoung: “… no healthy Christian ever moves past sermons, Scripture, Bible reading, prayer, sacraments, and the organized church. These are the God-appointed means by which we grow in Christ.”

Irritated“Which words and phrases irritate you the most?” My answer: Irregardless. I mean, come on, people – it’s not even a word. (Even if my illiterate spell-checker is accepting it as one)

33 Men [Caution: Mature] – Tim Challies reviews a book by Jonathan Franklin that recounts the rescue of the Chilean miners. “The last man was rescued from that mine on the 13th of October, 2010. On February 14, 2011 33 Men hit store shelves, a book detailing the disaster and response. 4 months. That hardly seems like enough time to write a book, not to mention fact-check it and edit it and print it. But I’ve got to say, this isn’t a bad book at all. It’s well-written and engaging and, as far as I can tell, quite accurate.”

An Important Question – Which one is your church?

Between Now and Then – A superb reminder. “One of the most wonderful things about the Apostles is that with all their heavenly knowledge they are probably among the most practical group of people that you’ll ever meet. They understood that though our heads and hearts are in heaven, our feet for the meantime remain planted on earth. The question, “Between now and then, what are we supposed to do?” is one that I see the Apostles addressing quite frequently.”

Gratitude Is Not the Way to God – We should remember that grace is what precedes the fruit, not the other way around. “Gratitude to God, just as our love to God, is a response to Him. We give our love and our thanks to God because He already performed the miracle in us. Because He changed us, because He opened our eyes to see we see clearly that He has given much and we don’t deserve any of it.”

Mrs. Wizard – Cool. Now that I own a Kindle, I think following this blog will be quite useful and informative.

Do I Laugh or Cry? – Haven’t seen this yet? You’re sorely missing out.

“If there is one person I dislike, it is a man who tries to air his grievances when I wish to air mine.” ~ P.G. Wodehouse, Love Among the Chickens

  1. Wow! I am so honored to be included in such an outstanding roundup!

I read the Dan Philips article earlier, too and found it very helpful. As always, he makes great points.

    Thanks for these referrals!
